Ascot could Appeal to Lavelle

Fox Appeal is set to drop back in trip as connections consider the Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy.

A 10-length winner from Raya Star over two miles three furlongs at Ascot, he could return to the Berkshire track for the Sodexo Clarence Chase on Saturday.

That would mean taking on seasoned Grade One campaigners over two miles and a furlong, while the alternative is to stick to novice company and go for the Racing Post Lightning Novices' Chase over an extended two miles at Doncaster seven days later.

"He's come out of that race really well. He's always a fresh horse, he's always full of beans and energy and he seems that way at the moment," said trainer Emma Lavelle.

"We made a tentative entry for the big race at Ascot, the Clarence House. We just thought we'd have a look.

"I'm interested in trying him over two miles. That's the real reason for that because he travelled so strongly in the two-mile-three there last time when he won and he's so quick I thought maybe he could be an Arkle horse.

"My thoughts were we'd have a crack at that if it wasn't too competitive or for the Lightning up at Doncaster where it looks like a lot of the smart novices are going. It looks like it could be a very good race.

"We'll see. In a way it may be more sensible to run him against fellow novices but the real idea of running him is to find out whether he's quick enough for that or not. I don't know. He'll go for one or the other.

"I'll be having a chat with the owners to see if we are going to pay a bit more to confirm him for Ascot on Monday and have a look at how that race is shaping up."
