Oakland beat Minnesota Twins 11-7 in their game, but news of the Rangers' 4-0 defeat filtered through during the Athletics' third innings to cap a four-game series sweep with the title.
Cleveland Indians kept their grip on the second American League Wild Card as they swept aside Houston Astros 9-2.
The win marked Cleveland's sixth four-game sweep of the season which tied a club record.

Atlanta Braves claimed their first National League East title since 2005 by virtue of the Nats' loss to the Marlins, before they beat Chicago Cubs 5-2 to boost their NL-best record to 92-63.
New York Mets came through 4-3 against Philadelphia Phillies while Boston Red Sox beat Toronto Blue Jays 5-2. The win for Boston means they remained on track to home field advantage in the play-offs.
Meanwhile, Seattle Mariners beat Los Angeles Angels 3-2 in a game that was twice delayed because of swarming bees, while Arizona Diamondbacks defeated Colorado Rockies 13-9 and Milwaukee Brewers beat St Louis Cardinals 6-4.
