Azarenka forced to miss Miami

World number four Victoria Azarenka has been forced to pull out of next week's Sony Open in Miami with a foot injury.

The Belarusian had to miss the tournaments in Doha and Dubai last month before returning to action in Indian Wells last week.

But it was clear all the way through Azarenka's loss to American Lauren Davis that she was not fit as she limped around the court and struggled to serve.

She said: "I am very sad not to be able to compete at this year's Sony Open in Miami.

"I love playing in the US and my results in the past were also great. But it's been now over a year that it seems that bad luck has been following me.

"I couldn't play in Miami last year with a problem in my ankle and now this with my foot.

"It is time for me to think about my recovery and I will work hard for that. I wish the tournament all the best for this 2014 edition. Miami is an amazing place and a great tournament. I hope to be there next year fully recovered and able to be competing for the title".

Azarenka revealed after the Davis loss that she suffered the foot problem, which she said was nerve damage, in practice just before the Australian Open.

She played in Melbourne but saw her defence of the title she won in 2012 and 2013 ended by Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarter-finals.

That continued the disappointing run Azarenka has had since losing the US Open final to Serena Williams last summe
