Ballance bashes the Unicorns

Gary Ballance ensured an early Yorkshire scare was only that as they strolled to an eight-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 win over the Unicorns.

Ballance battered the scratch team's attack to all parts in a fluent 103 not out, putting on 160 with Adam Lyth after the home side got into early trouble in their chase of 185.

Tom New was the batting star for the Unicorns with 83 off 92 balls but the team as a whole only managed 15 boundaries, and just one of those was a six.

They were stifled by some excellent Yorkshire seam bowling as Ryan Sidebottom took 3-44 and young Australian Mitchell Starc contributed 3-36.

A total of 184 never looked like standing up to close examination and only briefly were Yorkshire in trouble when Glen Querl dismissed Phil Jaques for three to reduce them to 26-2.

That would turn out to be their last success as Ballance soon hit his stride and dominated a stand with Adam Lyth, who was happy to play the anchor role in his unbeaten 60.

Ballance hit four sixes and eight fours, one of those taking him to his century just before the target was reached in the 33rd over.
