Ashley Barnes has been charged by the Football Association following his sending off at Bolton on Saturday.
The Brighton striker was dismissed for attempting to trip referee Nigel Miller and is already serving a four-match suspension - three for that offence and another because it was his second red card this season.
But his punishment could now be increased if an FA disciplinary panel rules the standard sanction is insufficient.
Barnes has until 6pm on Thursday to enter a plea and request a personal hearing.
