Barton handed 12-match ban

QPR midfielder Joey Barton has been banned for a total of 12 matches and fined £75,000 following his dismissal against Manchester City.

The Football Association confirmed an independent regulatory commission found Barton guilty of two counts of violent conduct.

The FA announced Barton received an automatic four-game suspension, with the additional eight matches a consequence of the manner of his dismissal.

QPR had previously announced their intention to carry out their own investigation once Barton's case had been dealt with by the FA.

Barton was shown a red card at the Etihad Stadium for elbowing Carlos Tevez, and he then kicked Sergio Aguero before attempting to headbutt Vincent Kompany.

He denied the charge of violent conduct against Kompany but the FA said the case against Barton was found to be proved.

An FA statement said: "An independent regulatory commission has today dealt with two charges of violent conduct against Joey Barton, arising from the game against Manchester City, resulting in an eight-match suspension and £75,000 fine for the Queens Park Rangers midfielder.

"This eight-match suspension is to run consecutively to the four-game suspension Barton was already given for his dismissal in the fixture, making a total of 12 matches."

Barton's acts were condemned by the chairman of the regulatory commission, who stated: "There are rules of conduct that should be adhered to, and such behaviour tarnishes the image of football in this country, particularly as this match was the pinnacle of the domestic season and watched by millions around the globe."

The Football Association's statement outlined the reasons behind Barton's long ban.

The statement said: "Following Barton's dismissal in the 54th minute of the match, there followed two incidents involving Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany. As Barton had already been dismissed, both of these incidents fell outside the jurisdiction of the referee.

"Barton accepted the charge of violent conduct against Aguero but denied the second breach of violent conduct against Kompany. The independent regulatory commission, however, found this second charge proved.

"Barton is already serving a four-match suspension for his dismissal in the match, which consists of three matches for violent conduct plus one match as this was the player's second dismissal of the season.

"The two further breaches for violent conduct ordered he be suspended for eight matches to run consecutively to the four matches, taking the total suspension to 12 matches."

The FA's regulatory panel had discretionary powers to further increase the length of the suspension if charges were found to be proven.

Barton's admission on Twitter that his violent actions were a cynical ploy to provoke a City player to be sent off saw those discretionary powers employed.

Barton insisted via Twitter on the day of his sending-off that he had not lost his head, but that a team-mate "suggested I should try to take 1 of theirs with me".

Speaking earlier this month, QPR chairman Tony Fernandes said: "There are experienced people who will come back to me and we'll review the whole situation.

"Joey has been an integral part of the club and has played his part.

"This is football, and I'm new to it. I don't profess to have all the answers."

what do you think?

He's fortunate that his players license hasn't been revoked. He's got off lightly.

Barton is a disgrace both on and off the field and the thug should not be allowed to play the game. Unfortunately, there are loads of idiots that think his behaviour is acceptable. The FA is a feeble/corrupt body that convinces no-one with their pathetic sanctions. £75,000 is no more than part of a weeks wages for Barton and that in itself is an obscenity. The game is corrupt and nobody does anything to put it right.

Well, that's a third of next season sitting on the sidelines for Barton, so what good is he to QPR ? And what other club would want him with his record. So pleased Newcastle showed him the door, troublemakers like him are not welcome here.

So get rid of him, then. If the people who draw up the contracts had any sort of intelligence, Barton will be in breach of contract, and it'll cost them nowt. If as i suspect, the contract is devoid of any penalty clauses, being the product of some clerk, then it's their own fault for signing a well known bully, without such protection. Personally, i would fine him every time he left he bog seat up, or sneezed. Get him out of the game !!!

12 match ban the way this guy plays? are they for real.......a normal person behaving like this would expect a jail sentence ara minimum! whilst I wouldn't advocate takeing anyones work away from them a 12 year ban would seem more appropriate - after all look at the people he has maimed in the process of the game......wouldn'tr be so bad if he could actually play football!!!!

This is quite unbelievable, I play for my local junior team, semi pro, and I have seen players get life bans for less than what he has done. He has proved time and again he has no self control and why the F. A. have not binned his player registration is beyond me. If he wasn't a footballer he would probably be getting arrested every weekend for assault. Actually up here in Scotland Duncan Ferguson got 3 months jail for a headbutt on the field, why can't the English cops charge him?

The FA find him guilty of two counts of violent conduct. This happened on full view of millions. Yet no police involvement ? Surely he broke the law ? What a good example before the Euros to have a police investigation and if guilty apply a banning order. Treat him like an ordinary supporter, not some over-paid, over-hyped superstar that he clearly isn't. Grow a spine FA and pass your findings on to the Met.

So you are saying Suarez is a racist. Complete and utter bull. One black guy calling another, isn't racism. It's in his culture, it's part and parcel of daily life, in his country. They call each other names that we consider racist all the time. It's a pity we don't apply british law to foreigners all the time. The Moslems would all leave. A black man calls another, a N......, that's fine. A white guy calls him a N... that's racism. What this pig does on a daily basis is criminal enough to justify hefty prison sentences. Don't try and bring up other stuff, for your own clubs gain.

He was found guilty of being racsit so I'm pretty sure that makes him racist aa aa, your talking out your backside. Even if he does say those things as part of his culture, there are campaigns in british football all year round which say "kick racsim out of football" and Suarez would of been aware of this and knew it's not acceptable. He's quite simply a racsit

Not sure if he should play again but dont agree with the punishment as he misses more games than a racist and only fined 75grand, he will still get wages without playing

This punishment is crazy all he did was elbow another player in the face, and violently knee another player in the back of the leg,oh and tried to headbutt someone and argue with the ref and try to fight ballotelli and refuse to go of the pitch, i ask you does he really deserve a 12 match ban and a £75000 fine? really? really?

Proper scumbag. I'm bored of this rubbish about him "trying to provoke a Man City player to try and get him sent off too". So he made this decision and thought "I'll go after the rewnowned hard man Aguero".......Okay. AND THEN he went after Balotelli who wasn't even on the pitch! He is a vile vile scumbag, nothing more and should be banned for life, or even better, stcuk in prison with his brother

Not trying to condone any violence on the pitch, but in the case of Barton, i would be happy to see him in a one to one fight with any of the players he has attacked. Maybe the next time he does it, everyone could just back away and let him get a good kicking. He's only a tough guy when he knows all hands are going to jump in and stop the trouble. He's not hard, he likes to think he is, like most of the "so called " Huyton tough guys. I know , i live around the corner. It's just an image, a false one at that, and it's no wonder his idiot brother is in the nick.

I love the comment in the paragraph, quote....Following Barton's dismissal in the 54th minute.....blah blah blah......he had already been sent off when 2 further incidents occurred.....as this was out of the referee's juridiction......blah blah blah.......he was still on the field of play, fair enough he can't be shown a further 2 red cards, but to only ban him for 12 games and fine him £75,000......he earns £50,000+ a week......fine him a years money.....ban him for a season and when the ban finishes.....revoke his license
