Battaglin grabs stage win

Enrico Battaglin won stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia, pulling off victory in the last kilometre to secure Bardiani their second successive win.

The gruelling Aglie to Oropa stage came right down the wire, when Battaglin caught leaders Dario Cataldo (Team Sky) and Jarlinson Pantano (Colombia).

The Italian was pulled back but surged again in the final 50 metres to edge past Cataldo, with Pantano coming in seven seconds behind.

Rigoberto Uran (Omega-QuickStep) retained the race lead, but saw it cut by five seconds by Cadel Evans during the mountainous stage in north-western Italy.

Pre-race favourite Nairo Quintana (Colombia) clawed back 25 seconds on Uran, but sits sixth in the overall standings.

Meanwhile, a volunteer has been airlifted to hospital in Turin after being hit by a motorbike carrying a cameraman.

"Luckily there was our doctor in tow, who was immediately able to revive him," Mauro Vegni director of the tour, said in a statement on

"It was a serious accident, but it does not seem correct to say more in the absence of reliable information."
