Bautista at the treble

Jose Bautista scored three home runs as American League East leaders Toronto Blue Jays claimed a 7-2 win over the struggling Boston Red Sox.

The Blue Jays moved to the top of the league for the first time in five years after putting the finishing touches to a three-game sweep of the Red Sox.

In second place, the New York Yankees suffered a 3-2 defeat to the White Sox with returning Chicago pitcher Chris Sale in impressive form following a muscle strain in his left arm.

Prince Fielder was ruled out for the rest of the season as the Texas Rangers claimed a 9-2 victory over the high-flying Detroit Tigers.

The first baseman is set to undergo an operation next week to repair a herniated disk in his neck, while team-mate Jurickson Profar sustained a serious shoulder injury in the same match which condemned the Tigers to their fourth-straight defeat.

At the top of the National League East, Ryan Doumit hit a two-run single to cap a three-run seventh inning as the Atlanta Braves rallied from three runs down to return to winning ways as they edged a 5-4 result against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Heavy rain suspended the match between the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies with the score tied at 2-2.

The two teams will pick up where they left off when the game is completed, which will most likely be when the Giants visit Coors Field from September 1-3.

The Miami Marlins saw off the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3, the Tampa Bay Rays claimed a 5-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics, the Cleveland Indians edged an 8-7 win over the Baltimore Orioles and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Washington Nationals 3-1.

Elsewhere, the New York Mets recorded a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the St Louis Cardinals claimed a third straight win with a 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Chicago Cubs were comfortable 5-1 winners against the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners overcame the Houston Astros 3-1.
