Bayer secure Drmic deal

Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the signing of Swiss international striker Josip Drmic.

Drmic was one of the Bundesliga's top scorers having only joined Nurnberg from FC Zurich last summer and he managed 17 goals despite the club suffering relegation.

Arsenal were among the clubs strongly linked with a summer move, but Bayer have moved to secure a deal ahead of the World Cup finals where the 21-year-old will hope to star for Switzerland.

Bayer's sporting director Ruid Voller confirmed they had held off interest from major rivals to land Drmic.

"We have been able to prevail against strong competition and are glad that Josip Drmic has joined us," said Voller.

"He is a player that gives us more options in attack. He's fast, assertive and flexible as he can play on the wing."

Drmic admits he is sad to be leaving Nurnberg after just one season, especially as he was unable to help them stay up.

"It's really bitter for me that I have to leave the club in this way," he said.

"I had, despite the sad season, a great time there but now with Bayer I want to play at the top of the Bundesliga and reach the Champions League."
