Benitez delighted with victory
Rafael Benitez has hailed the character of his Napoli side in their 1-0 triumph over Roma.
The outcome in Naples, courtesy of Jose Callejon's goal, allowed Napoli to return to winning ways after consecutive league draws against Genoa and Livorno in the previous two fixtures.
Moreover, the victory allowed Napoli to close the gap on second-placed Roma to three points.
"We won and I am happy. We are the only team to have beaten Roma twice this season," Benitez, whose side defeated the Giallorossi 3-0 in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, told sscnapoli.it.
"In our past games we played better but we failed to clinch three points.
"We wanted to win at all costs and we succeeded.
"We had last-minute absentees with Jorginho and (Valon) Behrami unavailable to play through injury but the team was united.
"Everyone did a great job and contributed to get this win.
"I am very satisfied."
Callejon could not be happier after his 10th goal of the season handed Napoli three valuable points to strengthen their bid of Champions League football next season.
Napoli are 10 points clear of fourth-placed Fiorentina with 11 games remaining.
"We gave 110 per cent," the Spanish forward said. "It was really important to win against Roma.
"I am very happy that my goal has allowed us to clinch three points.
"But it was a team effort. The team gave all it had to beat Roma.
"I think we have proved that we have character and hunger and this is the right spirit we needed to move forward.
"We are closer to our aim which is to finish second in Serie A and we are delighted with our performance against Roma."
Napoli visit Torino next while Roma host Udinese on March 17.
