Bennett claims first pro win

Ireland's Sam Bennett continued his strong start to the season by claiming his first professional victory at the one-day Clasica de Almeria in Spain.

The 23-year-old NetApp-Endura rider prevailed from a bunch sprint ahead of Juan Jose Lobato (Movistar) and Davide Vigano (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA).

The win follows a series of promising early-season results at the tours of Qatar and Oman and hands NetApp-Endura their first victory of the year.

Bennett said afterwards: "The guys got me perfectly to about 600m to go. I was well-positioned in the last corner. I had to go at 250m because the pace dropped.

"I came around everyone and took the inside line. At 100m to go my legs started to buckle and I thought I wasn't going to make it. But luckily I did. I am so happy to have taken my first win as a pro."

Bennett turned professional with NetApp-Endura over the winter.
