Bentham to take Newcastle Test

Warrington official Phil Bentham will make his Test debut as a referee when he takes charge of Sunday's game between Australia and New Zealand.

The 39-year-old's only previous international experience was as a touchjudge in the 2003 Ashes Series but Tuesday's appointment by the National Rugby League enables him to complete a hat-trick of firsts in 2011.

Bentham took charge of his first Challenge Cup final in August and was referee for last Saturday's Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.

Mirfield's Richard Silverwood has been the preferred choice of Australia over the last two years but he remains suspended by the Rugby Football League pending the outcome of an investigation into an alleged breach of discipline.
