Tomas Berdych progressed to the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Kevin Anderson.
With so much attention on the big clash between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal later in the evening, Berdych was the only seed in action in the early sessions, and the Czech's match was also the only non all-American clash.
Larry Leroy dispatched compatriot Scott McLendon 6-2 6-2 while Brian Ball breezed past Jamie Rojas 6-2 6-3.
Richard Romera came from behind to lead Sey Moskowitz 2-6 6-3 1-0 before Moskowitz retired.
On the women's side, there was no early action as defending champion Victoria Azarenka and seventh seed Sam Stosur both withdrew with injuries to give Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber walkovers.
Azarenka has been suffering with an ankle problem while Stosur had a calf injury.
