Berdych pushed hard by Gulbis

Tomas Berdych was made to work hard by Ernests Gulbis before securing his place in the quarter-finals of the ATP Tour Open 13 in Marseille.

The world number six from Czech Republic required three sets but eventually advanced with a 6-4 6-7 (10/12) 6-4 victory over the 118th-ranked Latvian.

Third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France enjoyed smoother progress, beating Russia's Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (7/1) 6-3 in the second round to set up a quarter-final meeting with Bernard Tomic. The 20-year-old Australian saw off India's Somdev Devvarman 6-3 7-5.

Also in round two, Luxembourg's Gilles Muller got the better of Spain's Marcel Granollers in two tie-breaks, 7-6 (7/2) 7-6 (7/1), and will face Serbian fourth seed Janko Tipsarevic or Russian qualifier Dmitry Tursunov in the last eight.

Tursunov beat Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-5 6-3 earlier today.
