Berkshire bypasses Champagne
Berkshire will run in the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket next month instead of Saturday's Champagne Stakes.
Trainer Paul Cole decided not to risk his exciting colt on potentially tricky ground at Doncaster on Saturday.
Not seen since producing an impressive performance in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, Berkshire's defection leaves a slightly ordinary field of seven for the Champagne.
"Even if they don't get any more rain, there's a danger the ground will be chopped up to hell at Doncaster by the weekend and I felt it was best to wait for some proper ground," said Cole.
"The horse is working great, he's in fantastic form and he'll go for the Dewhurst."
Richard Hannon has won the Group Two for the last couple of years with Trumpet Major and Toronado and his representative is July Stakes scorer Anjaal.
Ger Lyons runs his high-class gelding Exogenesis, third to War Command in the Futurity Stakes last time, while Acomb Stakes first and second Treaty Of Paris and The Grey Gatsby clash again.
Narrow Vintage Stakes runner-up Outstrip and Cable Bay, who took the same spot in the Richmond complete the field along with maiden winner Picks Pinta.
