Bertens wins maiden title
Kiki Bertens capped a remarkable week by claiming her first WTA title with victory over Laura Pous-Tio in the final of the Fes Grand Prix.
The 20-year-old Dutchwoman, ranked 149 in the world, had played only one WTA main draw prior to this tournament and on that occasion lost in the first round on home soil in 's-Hertogenbosch last year.
However, she was celebrating her maiden title today with a 7-5 6-0 win over Spaniard Pous-Tio, who herself was playing in a final for the first time at this level.
Bertens lost the opening three games of the final before hitting back in style and then taking the victory by winning nine successive games from 5-5 in the first set.
"In the beginning I was very nervous and she started well, but after I won the first set all my nerves were gone," Bertens said on www.wtatennis.com.
"I love it here. I was here for one week because I played the qualifiers too, so I'm a little bit tired now, but I'm going to celebrate tonight and then go back home tomorrow.
"I'm excited. I'm going to play more tournaments now and try to win more."
