Bony: Swansea deserved spoils

Wilfried Bony said Swansea City earned the right to celebrate victory after scoring their late winner at Newcastle.

Two successive defeats had dragged the Swans towards the drop zone and their hopes took another blow early on at St James' Park when Shola Ameobi slotted in an early opener.

But as the Magpies dropped deeper and deeper, the Welsh visitors stepped up the pace and Bony nodded in the leveller before the break then coolly stroked home from the penalty spot in injury time to bag the win.

It moved them six points above the relegation zone and Bony told Sky Sports: "It was a great performance and we are happy with that.

"But we deserved to win. They scored by a mistake and we just deserved it."

When asked if the victory was a major step to ensuring survival, Bony added: "Yes, yes, yes. We will take the positives and just think about the next game.

"If we can win our last three games then we should be OK. It's very important to win. The fans are confident in me and it's important to keep them happy and me."
