Boss wants Whitehouse to shine

Notts County manager Shaun Derry has challenged new signing Elliott Whitehouse to shine for his new club.

The 20-year-old, who was released by Sheffield United at the end of last season, has signed a one-year deal at Meadow Lane after impressing in the Sky Bet League One club's pre-season fixtures.

Derry told the club's official website: "It's great for the lad, because he's done fantastically well since coming in on trial.

"I've said to him that his objective now is to force his way into the side."Whitehouse played 22 times last term during loan spells at York and Alfreton and Derry is backing the midfielder to make the step up to the third tier of English football.

He added: "It's tough because you've got to be better than what we've got and we've got some good players here at Notts.

"It's difficult when you come into a strange place and the pressure's on you because you haven't got that comfort blanket of a one or two-year contract to fall back on.

"You've got to be right on top of your game every single day and I've got to say he has been."
