Laura Robson and Heather Watson combined to take a decisive doubles victory as Great Britain claimed a 2-1 win over Portugal in the Fed Cup in Israel.
Robson and Watson saw off Michelle Larcher de Brito and Joana Vale Costa 6-2 6-1 in 55 minutes to give Britain their second straight win the Europe/Africa Zone Group I pool stages.
Judy Murray's team now face a winner-takes-all tie with Hungary on Saturday to determine who progresses to the play-offs and stays in the hunt for a spot in World Group II next year.
Britain had eased past Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday and got off to a good start against Portugal as Robson defeated Margarida Moura 6-2 6-1 in their singles clash.
Watson then lost her rubber against world No 130 Larcher de Brito 6-1 6-4 but Murray opted to stick with the pair for the doubles rather than turn to Anne Keothavong or Johanna Konta.
Hungary have won both their matches 2-0 and are likely to provide a stiffer test for Britain, with Timea Babos a top 100 player and Greta Arn hugely experienced.
The winner of Pool B will compete in a play-off on Sunday against the winners of Pool D, with the winners of that going forward to a World Group II promotion play-off in April.
Britain got to that stage last season in Murray's first year as captain but lost to Sweden.
