Britain to open against Israel

Great Britain will open what could be a pivotal European Championship basketball campaign against Israel on September 4.

FIBA Europe have unveiled the schedule for the group stages of the EuroBasket, which will be played in Slovenia.

After Israel, Britain face a tough match-up against France on September 5 and Belgium the following day.

They have a rest day on September 7 and then face Germany and Ukraine respectively over the next two days.

The British Basketball program had its funding restored by UK Sport on appeal last month, but on a conditional basis that will see their performance reviewed year-on-year, meaning a strong showing in Slovenia could be crucial.

Britain have qualified for the previous two EuroBaskets on merit, debuting in 2009, but were awarded an automatic place for Slovenia by virtue of appearing in last summer's Olympics.

They are yet to make it out of the group stages at a major tournament.
