British judo stars off to Paris

Great Britain will take a seven-strong team of Olympic hopefuls to the Paris Grand Slam this weekend.

They will be looking to erase memories of their World Championship disappointment.

The prestigious International Judo Federation event will be held at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, where British fighters failed to deliver a world medal last summer.

That eventually led to the overhaul of the British Judo Association backroom staff, with the departure of head coach Patrick Roux and performance director Margaret Hicks.

Norfolk judoka Colin Oates produced the best result for Team GB at the Worlds when he finished fifth in the under-66kg, losing out in his bronze-medal fight.

This weekend Oates will be joined by leading Scottish fighter Euan Burton, ranked in the top 15 for the half-middleweight under-80kg, and extra-lightweight Ashley McKenzie, the 2010 European Under-23 champion.

European bronze medallist Sophie Cox will compete in the under-52kg category, with Sarah Clark, who claimed gold at the recent British Closed Championships in Sheffield, fighting at under-57kg, along with heavyweights Karina Bryant, the world number 15, and Sarah Adlington.

British Judo's performance operations manager Karen Roberts said: "The team have had a fantastic preparation, with three domestic camps, international randori [training] at the Olympic training camp in Mittersill, Austria as well as competing at the British Closed Championships.

"The Paris Grand Slam marks the start of the 'home straight' for the Games, it's a very exciting time for the players themselves, but also every member of the BJA who have supported them every step of the way."
