Brooking: No feud with Harry

Sir Trevor Brooking has rejected the notion he was the reason why Harry Redknapp failed to get the England manager's job.

Seven days ago, Redknapp remained the overwhelming favourite to replace Fabio Capello, as he had been since the Italian walked out in February.

Yet the FA turned to Roy Hodgson instead, which FA chairman David Bernstein stating earlier this week that the four-man Club England panel responsible for making the decision had chosen the West Brom manager as their man a month before making their move.

Yet Bernstein offered no explanation why Redknapp, who unlike Hodgson has won a major trophy in England and secured Champions League qualification with Tottenham, was overlooked.

Once again, there has been scrutiny of an apparent bust-up between Brooking and Redknapp dating back to the 1990s, which centred around how Billy Bonds ended up being replaced as West Ham manager.

It has been suggested more than once that Brooking believed Redknapp stabbed Bonds in the back in order to get the West Ham job and had never forgiven him.

However, in the wake of Hodgson's appointment, Brooking insists that was not the case.

"To be honest, we discussed a lot of candidates, none of whom I had a personal problem with," said Brooking.

"It's a non-starter. That didn't come into the decision-making at all."
