Warwickshire assistant coach Dougie Brown wants to replace England-bound Ashley Giles as the Bears' director of cricket.
Former England one-day player Brown was a member of Warwickshire's successful side of the 1990s.
He also assisted Giles, who is to become England's limited-overs coach, in leading the county to the LV= County Championship Division One title last season.
Brown said: "I will be putting my hat in the ring for the director of cricket role.
"I have a bit of experience and it is a help I have worked in this environment for a long time and understand what it entails and the dynamics of the team.
"It will be a big challenge for whoever takes over and Warwickshire's loss is England's gain with Ashley's appointment. Following him will be tough.
"But I am sure there will be a number of strong candidates for what is a very attractive post. It is a settled dressing room, with a great work ethic."
Brown believes former England spinner Giles deserves the opportunity with his country.
He said: "Ash has done so much during the past five years at Warwickshire and it is a great chance for him. He thoroughly deserves it."
