Burki signs for Freiburg

Freiburg have completed the signing of Swiss goalkeeper Roman Burki from Grasshoppers.

The 23-year-old moves to the Bundesliga after beginning his career with Young Boys before moving to Grasshoppers on a permanent deal after a loan spell in Zurich. The length of the deal was not confirmed.

"The challenge of the Bundesliga excites me greatly and SC Freiburg enjoys, not least through the (Swiss) national players Admir Mehmedi and Gelson Fernandes, a good reputation in Switzerland," Burki said.

"This to me is a further step in my career and I am looking forward to my time in Freiburg."

Burki will travel to Brazil this summer as part of Switzerland's World Cup squad and Freiburg sporting director Jochen Saier admitted the club had been looking at him for a long time.

"We have observed Roman Burki for a long time and are very pleased that the deal has come about," he said.

"He fits our requirements and has gained experience in both the Super League and in Europe for Grasshoppers and with the Swiss Under-21s."
