Capello critical of JT decision

Fabio Capello is reported as saying he is "absolutely not" in agreement with the FA's decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy.

Capello was known to be upset that Terry was removed as captain on Friday, a decision that was taken by FA chairman David Bernstein without any consultation with the £6million-a-year manager of the national side.

The decision came three months after Capello had been given full authority to deal with the Terry issue as he saw fit, selecting him as captain for the friendly win over Sweden, on the basis the defender was innocent of racism charges until such time as he is found guilty.

It is easy to see how Capello may conclude he has been badly undermined by developments, which took their decisive turn once it was known Terry would not face a court hearing into allegations he used racist language to Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road in October until July, after Euro 2012.

And, interviewed by national Italian broadcaster Rai 1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, where he attended Chelsea's 3-3 draw with Manchester United, Capello stated openly how angry he was.

Asked whether he was in agreement with "the Federation's decision re Terry?", Capello replied: "No, absolutely not.

"I have spoken to the chairman and I have said that, in my opinion, one cannot be punished until it's official and the court - a non-sporting court, a civil court - has made a decision to decide if John Terry has done what he has been accused of.

"I thought it was right that Terry should keep the captain's armband.

"The fact that the board has decided in this way is because it falls under the competence regarding ethics."

Capello is due at Wembley on Monday, where he will speak with Bernstein before heading to Anfield for Liverpool's Premier League encounter with Tottenham.

The fact he did attend Sunday's game as planned would seem to be an indication he wants to continue in his job.

However, having challenged the FA so openly about such a contentious subject, in the process raising the potential for fierce disagreement with individual England players, there has to be a possibility of Capello's tenure ending, four years to the day since his first game in charge, a 2-1 win over Switzerland at Wembley.

The entire issue of the England captaincy has become a noose around Capello's neck.

A firm believer of the Italian mentality where the most experienced player in the squad gets the armband, Capello was informed of the symbolic nature of the job in England and duly auditioned Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard for the role.

Capello thought he had the right man in the Chelsea skipper.

He was forced to revise that stance when an issue in Terry's private life led to Capello demanding his presence at Wembley in February 2010, when he was removed as captain and Rio Ferdinand installed as his replacement.

Ferdinand then got injured during the first day of training at the World Cup in South Africa, meaning Gerrard got the job.

Then, after assessing the unseemly manner in which the armband was handed around during a friendly win over Denmark in Copenhagen 12 months ago, Capello decided to give Terry the job back again.

Now that decision has exploded in his face once more.

Former England international and now outspoken radio pundit Stan Collymore has labelled the situation as "a debacle and a shambles".

In addition to attending the game at Anfield on Monday, Capello has a busy month ahead and is due to name his squad on February 25 for the Wembley friendly against World Cup finalists Holland four days later.

what do you think?

I am in complete agreement with the FA - yes he is innocent until proven guilty but the point is he i representing England. How many people get suspended from their JOBS whilst they await the outcome of investigations. Capello is completely out of order saying publicly what he thinks if you ask most people whether they are in agreement I think you would be surprised as to how many think its the right decision even though it should have been done when he was first charged. Good for Ferdinand in saying he wouldnt take the Captaincy if he was offered it - Terrry should never have been given the armband back in the first place then we wouldnt be having this debate. Lets get on with playing football - ENGLAND need to concentrate of the game not one person.

Terry and Capello as bad as each other - I look forward to the day where I can watch England without a nasty taste in the mouth left by the likes of those two, plus Lampard, Gerrard, Cole etc etc

I personally don't like John Terry, but that's only on the basis of what has been written about him over the past number of years - I do know that one can't believe the gutter press. However, until he's been proven guilty through due process, he should be presumed innocent, and treated as an innocent man untill proven otherwise.

The FA should be re-named F OFF, they are a load of dictatorial c*retins that are way beyond their retirment age, ask them if they understand what freedom of speech is. Football is in a mess Sat and Sun games were all about cheating two penalties `NO WAY` if cheatimg is all about winning why bother watching football we all know what happened with snooker, ratings have flopped. Manchester U four penalties in two games ????????????? By the way I support no team but if football is all about conning the ref count me out. Many have now got bored with all the cheating. By the way Fab I dare you to tell the A where to stuff their job.

Who is the person who instigated these charges against John Terry and what connection if any does he/she have with Anton Ferdinand or QPR ?

Mr Capello should remember who is in charge, he may be the team manager but he is not the boss of english football, if you or I critisised our boss in such a public way we would expect to be sacked. JT should have temp stood down whilst the case went on, then he could have come back afterwards, now in my mind he can never come back.

Orange - SORT YOUR FILTERS OUT!!! There is NOTHING wrong in my opinion that England need leadership from people with consistent moral and responsible codes of conduct. Anything else DOES continually bring our game into disrepute. The rest of Europe laugh at us. The team is now in disaray AGAIN because of the behaviour of ONE player. Chelsea managed without JT yesterday, perhaps ENGLAND should do the same. Clean the game up the way Rugby has managed SUCCESFULLY to do.

Whilst racist comments are not acceptable in any form, one wonders if the same punishment would have been inflicted if it was a black person swearing at a white person. The FA do have a responsibility to stamp out racicism in football, but surely by making this decision they are putting themselves above the law of the land which states you are innocent until proven guilty. Is this the FA trying to be fashionably correct!

POLLY, I don't think it has anything to do with the FA being PC. I agree with you how refreshing it would have been for JT to put his hands up and pay what would have been the penalty of £2500. He and his legal team have decided to delay until July, a decision that I think he may be regretting. Racially motivated incidents are AGAINST the law and JT is not above it. People working in corporate roles or education are sent on 'gardening' leave if they become involved in investigations of conduct. This doesn't mean they are guilty until proven otherwise. JT is still allowed to 'work'. He has just been relieved of the additional pressure while he 'fights tooth and nail' to prove his innocence.
