Cardinals cut ties with Wells

Beanie Wells, who was selected with the 31st pick of the 2009 draft, has been released by the Arizona Cardinals.

Wells played in 51 games during his time with the Cardinals, gaining 2,471 yards rushing and scoring 24 touchdowns.

However, his career with the franchise has seen him struggle with injuries; he was bothered by knee problems, while an issue with his toe restricted him to just eight games last season.

In releasing Wells, who was taken with the 31st pick in the 2009 draft, the Cardinals will save around $1.5 million in cap space. They also announced Fozzy Whittaker, another tail-back on their roster, has been cut.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have cut linebacker Dan Connor and restructured the contracts of three players to get under the salary cap.

Connor, who joined the Cowboys in the last off-season on a two-year deal, started eight games in the absence of starters Sean Lee and Bruce Carter through injury, finishing up with 58 tackles.

Guard Mackenzy Bernadeau, defensive tackle Jay Ratliff and cornerback Orlando Scandrick have all remained with the franchise after working out new deals, turning money owed from base salaries into signing bonuses.

The Cowboys had previously re-worked contracts with DeMarcus Ware, Jason Witten, Miles Austin and cornerback Brandon Carr, who only joined them a on a five-year deal worth $50 million last March.
