Cardinals stun Nationals

The St Louis Cardinals came from 6-0 down to beat the Washington Nationals 9-7 and book their place in the National League Championship Series.

Daniel Descalso starred with three RBI, including two in a dramatic four-run ninth.

The defending World Series champions were in all sorts of trouble as home runs from Ryan Zimmerman, Bryce Harper and Michael Morse helped put the Nationals 6-0 up after three innings of the decisive fifth game of their NL Divisional Series.

The Cardinals chipped away, including a home run from Descalso in the eighth, but they trailed 7-5 heading into the top of the ninth.

There still seemed to be little danger when, after surrendering a lead-off double to Carlos Beltran, Drew Storen got two quick outs.

But he walked the next two batters, then surrendered back-to-back two-run singles to Descalso and Pete Kozma, and the Nats had no reply.

It puts the Cardinals through to an NLDS series with the San Francisco Giants.

The New York Yankees also advanced as they won game five against the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 thanks to a complete game from CC Sabathia.

Sabathia allowed four hits and two walks, striking out nine, and surrendered his only run in the eighth by which time he was staked to a three-run lead.

With two hits including a solo shot, Curtis Granderson led the offence for the Yankees, who advance to the American League Divisional Series against the Detroit Tigers.
