David Carry returned to Ponds Forge on Thursday to book a spot in the 200 metres freestyle final at the British Gas ASA National Championships.
The former double Commonwealth champion was highly emotional yesterday when he set a new personal best in the 400m freestyle to claim the second berth in the event at London 2012.
The Stockport ITC's swimmer's achievement was especially impressive given his previous best was set during the performance-enhancing suit era at the 2008 Olympics.
The 30-year-old is also in heavy training, but he qualified fifth for tonight's 200m freestyle as he looks to book a spot on the 4x200m relay in the final selection meet for the Olympics.
Carry said: "There are so few opportunities as a full-time swimmer to be on top of your game.
"After last night I realised I was in good shape.
"I love that 4x200 relay, I would love to be on that team.
"So I am hoping to keep that momentum going (from last night)."
There is one individual slot still available with Robbie Renwick having taken one at the first trials at the Aquatics Centre in March, with the likes of Iuean Lloyd and Jak Scott set to battle it out.
Thirty-eight swimmers were selected for Team GB in the spring, although a 100m breaststroke slot was freed up when Daniel Sliwinski was forced out through injury, leaving 15 places available at this meet.
As well as Carry, Rebecca Adlington and Lucy Ellis booked relay slots last night.
One place is still available in the men's 100m butterfly alongside Michael Rock, with Antony James, Ian Hulme and Jack Marriott set to battle tonight.
Molly Renshaw, just 16 and the baby of last year's World Championship team, is favourite to take the second 200m breaststroke berth heading the field into the final.
Commonwealth champion James Goddard is no longer competing in the 200m backstroke and, with neither spot taken, the field is wide open.
Former British record holder Chris Walker-Hebborn looked impressive qualifying.
Amy Smith is fastest into the 100m freestyle final in an event in which she has already qualified for London along with former world silver medallist Fran Halsall, who is not competing in Sheffield.
In non-Olympic events, Lauren Quigley and Smith head the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly respectively.
