Cavendish wins Turkish opener

Mark Cavendish got his Tour of Turkey campaign off to the best-possible start with victory on stage one.

The Manxman (Omega Pharma - Quick-Step) took a comfortable sprint win on the seafront in Alanya in his debut appearance at the event.

Returning from a period of absence due to illness, Cavendish held off Elia Viviani (Cannondale) and Theo Bos (Belkin) to move into an early race lead.

It was Belkin who took it up in the final kilometre but there was no stopping Cavendish, who dived to the right to find the optimum line after 141km of action.

A relatively straightforward parcours ensured a peloton of fresh teams and riders coming into the finish which make for a nail-biting sprint.

Returning from a broken collarbone, Cavendish's great rival Andre Greipel (Lotto Belisol) did not contest the sprint, opting instead for lead-out duties on the run-in.
