Championships heading to Spain
The 2014 Road Cycling World Championships will take place in Ponferrada, Spain, the International Cycling Union has confirmed.
The world governing body sought assurances over funding as a result of the global financial crisis, with organisers given 30 days by the UCI management committee to meet certain contractual commitments.
UCI president Pat McQuaid said: "I am delighted to confirm that the Ponferrada organisers have responded quickly and efficiently to our request, providing us with the financial and organisational guarantees that we required.
"We can now look forward with confidence to the 2014 UCI Road World Championships in one of our traditional cycling nations." The announcement came with an additional caveat.
A UCI statement added: "This confirmation is on the condition that remaining guarantees are forthcoming."
The event, to be held from September 20 to 28, will be the first World Championships in Spain since the Madrid event in 2005.
