Christiansen sacked by Steelers

Sheffield Steelers have sacked coach Doug Christiansen - less than halfway through his two-year contract.

The 35-year-old American took over in the summer after leaving Elite League rivals Belfast Giants, who he guided to the title in 2011-12.

Steelers announced Christiansen's departure on their official website.

Christiansen, having earlier this week seen his assistant Marc LeFebvre take over as Coventry Blaze coach, suffered a 5-3 defeat to Nottingham Panthers in the Challenge Cup semi-final first leg at Sheffield Arena on Wednesday night in what proved his final game in charge.

Steelers have endured an inconsistent season and sit third in the Elite League, 21 points behind runaway leaders Belfast.

Captain Steven Goertzen has taken over as temporary player-coach.
