CONI dismiss Acerbi case

Italy's Olympic Committee (CONI) have on Monday dismissed the doping case against Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi.

Acerbi, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer last summer, failed a drug test in December after a Serie A game against Cagliari.

The 26-year-old was provisionally suspended by a National Anti-Doping Tribunal but the decision was later overturned after it was revealed that the high levels of hormone found in his system were produced by cancerous cells, meaning the disease had returned.

A statement from CONI read: "The National Anti-doping tribunal, presided by Luigi Fumagalli, has accepted the request by the Anti-doping Agency to declare Francesco Acerbi, a member of Club Sassuolo, not responsible for any violation of the anti-doping rules."

Acerbi, a former AC Milan player, continued to train while undergoing chemotherapy treatment earlier this year but has yet to return to play.
