Costa resigns from Clermont

Helena Costa has resigned from her position as manager of French Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot before even taking part in a game.

Costa, who became the first female head coach of a team in the top two divisions of one of Europe's major five leagues last month, announced her decision via a statement on the club's website.

The club said Costa's decision not to honour her commitments down was "sudden and surprising".

Costa, 36, neglected to explain the reason for her sudden decision but did say the following: "I deeply regret this situation. I thank all those who have supported me and I am most grateful.

"The operation of the club will continue with other stakeholders to prepare for the new season."

Costa has previously coached youth teams at Benfica and has scouted for Scottish Premiership champions Celtic as well as managing the Iranian and Qatari women's teams.
