Danson double boosts England

Alex Danson scored twice as England beat Germany 3-1 to secure a second-placed finish in Pool A of the World League Final in Argentina.

Germany broke the deadlock in the 17th minute as Eileen Hoffmann redirected a shot past Maddie Hinch but the lead did not last long with Danson netting the equaliser off a Hannah Macleod pass within a minute.

England started the second half the stronger and took the lead from a penalty corner as Nicola White steered Kate Richardson-Walsh's deflection into the path of Sophie Bray who fired home.

Conditions were not ideal for either side as the rain lashed down but England sealed the win in the final minute as Danson beat two defenders and lifted the ball over Barbara Vogel.

Head coach Jason Lee said: "I think it was a very gutsy performance from the girls today and some of the girls who have struggled a bit across the first two games really stepped up their efforts today which was really pleasing for me to see.

"Germany have had the edge over us this year so it was nice to get our own back a little bit today."

Captain Richardson-Walsh won her 200th cap against the Germans and added: "It felt like a typical English day out there today, with the rain lashing down and the pitch playing quite slow we really had to work hard for the result.

"Two hundred England caps is not something I ever imagined I would achieve when I started playing back in 1999 and to seal it with a win today in a game like that is really special.

"We always say we never lose on a milestone and I feel really proud to have got the three points."

England will now face a quarter-final on Thursday afternoon against either Australia, Argentina, China or New Zealand who complete their Pool B matches on Tuesday evening.
