Datsyuk soars for Red Wings
Pavel Datsyuk scored the only goal of the game as the Detroit Red Wings drew first blood in their play-off encounter with the Boston Bruins.
The Presidents' Trophy winners had been tipped by many to go one better than their Stanley Cup final appearance last season, but drew a blank against the Red Wings, for whom goaltender Jimmy Howard made 25 saves, including an excellent stop from Jarome Iginla's deflected shot.
It proved to be a pivotal save as moments later Datsyuk burst up the other end to score a 30-footer with a little over three minutes of the match remaining.
Western Conference champions the Anaheim Ducks doubled their lead in the seven-match series with the Dallas Stars after edging to a 3-2 win in game two.
Alex Chiasson gave the Stars the ideal start before Anaheim came roaring back with goals from Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Andrew Cogliano and although Ryan Garbutt set up a tense finale, the Ducks held on.
The Montreal Canadiens also took a 2-0 series lead after a comfortable 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Rene Bourque scored twice, while there were also goals for David Desharnais and Brendan Gallagher to put the Canadiens in charge, meaning Teddy Purcell's powerplay effort late on counted for little.
