Davis powers Orioles past Pirates

Chris Davis hit three home runs as the Baltimore Orioles eased to a 9-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Davis' three homers in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings yielded five runs as the Orioles moved to 23-20 on the season.

Adam Wainwright surrendered just a single hit in a 5-0 win for the St Louis Cardinals against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

It was the first single-hit game of the pitcher's career and he was backed up by Matt Adams and Jhonny Peralta who each hit home runs to help St Louis to victory.

New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka had a less successful evening suffered his first Major League defeat giving up eight hits in a 6-1 defeat to Chicago Cubs.

Nolan Arenado clobbered a two-out, walk-off double in a three-hit performance which helped guide the Colorado Rockies to a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants.

The Washington Nationals claimed a 9-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds while the Cleveland Indians caused an upset beating the Detroit Lions 6-2.

The Los Angeles Dodgers were 9-4 winners over the New York Mets and the Angels made it a city double as they beat the Houston Astros 9-3.

The Atlanta Braves clinched a 5-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers while the Tampa Bay Rays were also blanked as they fell 3-0 to the Oakland Athletics.

The Philadelphia Philies beat the Miami Marlins 6-5, the Toronto Blue Jays were 7-4 victors over the Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners overcame the Texas Rangers 6-2.

In the day's other two games, the Chicago White Sox toppled the Kansas City Royals 7-6 and the Minnesota Twins defeated the San Diego Padres 5-3.
