De Kock handed SA contract

South Africa have handed national contracts to Quinton de Kock and David Miller for the 2014-15 season.

Cricket South Africa confirmed their new list of retained players on Tuesday, cutting the number from the usual 22 to 17 because of an estimated budget shortfall of around $5m.

De Kock has made a huge impact for the Proteas in limited-overs cricket, hitting four centuries in just over a month late last year against Pakistan and India.

Marchant de Lange, Dean Elgar, Colin Ingram, Aaron Phangiso and Thami Tsolekile have been dropped from the CSA's books but there is a special one-year deal for Jacques Kallis, who recently retired from Test cricket.

Kallis' deal "recognises his immense contribution to South African cricket over a long period of time and secures his availability for the ODI squad", according to a press release, and it is not part of the national list.

CSA will also offer 12 top-up contracts for younger players aspiring to join the Proteas squad in the future.

South Africa contracted players: Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir, Rory Kleinveldt, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
