Del Potro motors past Monfils
Second seed Juan Martin del Potro made straightforward progress through a seemingly tricky first-round match against Gael Monfils at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.
The Argentinian was drawn against high-profile wild card Monfils in the tie of the round but broke the Frenchman's serve once in each set to wrap up a comfortable 6-3 6-4 win in 71 minutes.
He will next play Latvia's Ernests Gulbis, who stormed past home player Robin Haase 6-2 6-1 in 50 minutes.
There was something for the Dutch crowd to celebrate, though, as wild card Thiemo de Bakker knocked out Mikhail Youzhny.
The Russian took the first set 6-3 but lost the second on a tie-break and was two breaks down at 1-4 in the third when he retired due to a hip injury.
De Bakker awaits Roger Federer should the world number two beat Slovenia's Grega Zemlja on Wednesday evening.
The experienced Jarkko Nieminen inflicted the dreaded 'double-bagel' - a 6-0 6-0 defeat - on young Belgian David Goffin, who had to save a further six break points in a hopelessly one-sided hour of play.
France's Julien Benneteau beat Tobias Kamke of Germany 6-3 6-2 in Tuesday's other match and will take on Victor Hanescu in the next round.
