Diego has revealed his intent to work on his relationship with Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath ahead of his return to the club.
The Brazilian midfielder spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid, having fallen out with Magath after just one season with the Wolves.
The 27-year-old won the Europa League with the Spanish club last season, but is now focused on speaking to Magath.
"As it stands now, I will go back and am back at Wolfsburg from July 2," Diego said in an interview with Kicker magazine.
"There are no problems with Felix Magath. It's clear that at the beginning we have to sit down together and talk - about the past, about the future."
Diego claimed Atletico want him to stay with them, but his future was up in the air.
"The year in Madrid was one of the most important of my career," he said. "But I am not a bad guy.
"Anything can happen. The coach, the players, the fans, they would like me to stay in Madrid.
"But we also have to look at the financial situation. It is not up to me what happens. The clubs have to sort that out."
