Diyas shocks Flipkens in France
Zarina Diyas claimed a major scalp at the Internationaux de Strasbourg as she beat third seed Kirsten Flipkens into the second round.
The 20-year-old Kazakh, who reached the third round of the Australian Open in January, got the better of Belgium's Flipkens to book a showdown with Ajla Tomljanovic.
Diyas, the world number 96, was forced to play a third set after 2013 Wimbledon semi-finalist Flipkens clinched a tie-break to edge the second, but she raised her game again to triumph 6-2 6-7 (7/9) 6-3 in a little over two hours.
Croatia's Tomljanovic awaits following her comfortable 6-4 6-0 beating of Kristina Mladenovic.
Elena Vesnina of Russia was another top seed to fall early, the fifth-favourite for honours in north-east France succumbing to a 7-5 3-6 6-3 defeat at the hands of Casey Dellacqua.
Eighth seed Alison Riske got the better of Teliana Pereira to win 6-3 6-3 while Americans Madison Keys and Vania King recorded respective victories over Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor and Paula Ormaechea.
Elsewhere, home hopeful Claire Feuerstein dispatched Canada's Sharon Fichman 6-2 6-4.
The final round of qualifying matches saw Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, Ashleigh Barty, Silvia Soler-Espinoza and Olga Govortsova win through to the main draw.
