The loss for Boston drops them into a tie with Tampa Bay, who ended the Yankees' five-game winning streak behind home runs from Jose Lobaton, Evan Longoria, Matt Joyce and Ben Zobrist as they roughed up New York starter Hiroki Kuroda.
The loss sees the Yankees lose ground in the wildcard standings too as they are now 3.5 games out.
