Draw keeps Ajax out in front

Ajax extended their lead at the top of the Eredivisie table to five points with a 1-1 draw away at PEC Zwolle on Sunday afternoon.

Davy Klaassen had Ajax ahead after just seven minutes but Guyon Fernandez grabbed a leveller just before the break and that was how it ended.

FC Twente have a game in hand over the defending champions and take on FC Groningen on Wednesday.

Groningen will go into that game on the back of three straight league defeats after they were beaten 3-1 by Heerenveen.

Rajiv Van La Parra and Hakim Ziyech had Heerenveen two up and things got worse for the home side when Maikel Kieftenbeld was dismissed seven minutes before the break.

Alfred Finnbogason then extended the lead from the penalty spot but both sides were down to 10 men when Kenny Otigba was given his marching orders before Michael De Leeuw grabbed a late consolation for Groningen.

Four goals in the last 11 minutes helped RKC Waalwijk to an emphatic 5-2 win over FC Utrecht.

Romeo Castelen gave RKC an eighth-minute lead but the scores were level just two minutes later thanks to a Jens Toornstra penalty.

Daniel De Ridder and Kenny Anderson then scored two goals in three minutes to put RKC in control but Steve De Ridder reduced the deficit just a minute later.

Jean-David Beauguel then re-opened the two-goal cushion in the last minute and Aurelien Joachim completed the scoring in stoppage time.

In the day's other game, Heracles and Cambuur Leeuwarden played out a 1-1 draw with Mike te Wierik's late strike cancelling out Elvis Manu's opener.
