Father-and-son team Gary and Josh Moore teamed up to take the Betfred Grand National Trial at Haydock Park with the revitalised Well Refreshed.
A strongly-supported 9/2 favourite, the winner travelled well off the pace in the early stages and threw down his challenge to Rigadin De Beauchene in the home straight.
He nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory when ploughing through the final fence, leaving a horse-shaped dent in the obstacle, but his conditional jockey stayed in the plate and allowed the winner to coast home to score by 14 lengths.
Rigadin De Beauchene, who chased the winner home in a Lingfield handicap in December, occupied the same placing again, while Monbeg Dude made late gains for third.
"It's a big success for the yard and for the horse as well, he's been very progressive all season," said Moore junior, who travelled up from Sussex with the horse.
"He's a bit erratic at times, but I've just about got the hang as to how to ride him.
"That was only his sixth run over fences and he's fallen on two of them but he's done well to get his confidence back and his jumping is improving.
"Over a longer trip and heavy ground you can afford to drop him out, let the race fall apart and take your time with him. Maybe on better ground he might find things happening a bit too quickly for him.
"Dad and I were both pretty confident as he will keep going in these conditions with just 10st on his back."
Well Refreshed is not in the Grand National, but Moore jnr told Racing UK that Uttoxeter's Midlands National was likely to be on the agenda.
"That will probably he is end-of-season target and then maybe next season we might look at Aintree as he stays so well," he said.
