Five birdies in seven holes from Jason Dufner has put him level at the top of the leaderboard with overnight leader Emiliano Grillo in Perth.
After 12 holes the Ryder Cup player is five under for the day after recovering from a bogey on the first.
An eagle on three put Dufner back in the hunt and despite another bogey on the fifth, those five birdies took him to 11 under.
Argentinian Grillo was four shots clear at the top of the ISPS Handa Perth International after a solid opening nine holes.
The 20-year-old picked up seven pars and birdied both the sixth and ninth to move to 13 under par before consecutive bogeys on 10 and 11 gave the rest of the field hope.
American Bo van Pelt is a shot further back after a solid if unspectacular opening 11 which saw him register three birdies, on one, seven and 11, with a bogey on six, the only blotch on his scorecard to date.
