Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet wasted little time in reaching the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open in Portugal on Wednesday.
Second seed Gasquet was particularly impressive, losing only two games in his 6-1 6-1 victory over Paolo Lorenzi, while third seed Wawrinka had a trickier time in the first set against qualifier Ivan Navarro before coming through 7-6 (7/5) 6-1.
In the last eight Wawrinka will face Dutch sixth seed Robin Haase, who dropped the opening set to another qualifier, Inigo Cervantes, but recovered to win 5-7 6-4 6-2.
Awaiting Frenchman Gasquet is Spanish qualifier Daniel Munoz-De La Nava following his 6-4 6-4 victory over eighth seed Flavio Cipolla, while in the final first-round match America's Bobby Reynolds beat Attila Balazs of Hungary 6-3 6-4.
In the women's tournament, top seed Roberta Vinci of Italy demolished home wild card Maria Joao Koehler 6-2 6-0 in the second round but the defending champion is out, Anabel Medina Garrigues beaten 3-6 6-3 7-5 by fellow Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa.
The second and fifth seeds also fell, with Russia's Maria Kirilenko beaten 1-6 6-1 7-5 by Italian qualifier Karin Knapp while Jie Zheng of China was no match for Galina Voskoboeva, the Kazakh winning 6-4 6-1.
Fourth seed Petra Cetkovska did progress, the Czech seeing off Britain's Heather Watson 6-3 6-1, and she will meet sixth seed Kaia Kanepi in the last eight after the Estonian defeated America's Vania King 6-3 6-4.
There were two retirements today, Australian Jarmila Gajdosova pulling out with an ankle injury after losing the first set 7-2 on a tie-break to seventh seed Nadia Petrova, while a foot problem forced ninth seed Polona Hercog out while she trailed Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4 3-0.
