Eagles soar to win over Lions

Newcastle Eagles continued their excellent start to the defence of their BBL Championship title with an 88-72 triumph over London Lions.

After beginning their season with a win over Glasgow Rocks on Friday the Eagles started strongly on Sunday night, opening up a 28-17 lead by the end of the first quarter.

They did not look like relinquishing the lead after taking a 47-35 interval lead and duly completed a comfortable victory, Charles Smith top-scoring with 17 points for the visitors to condemn the Lions to their second successive loss.

Glasgow put Friday's disappointment behind them with a 92-82 success over Durham Wildcats at the Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre.

EJ Harrison and Gareth Murray both bagged 20 points to help the Rocks claim their first points of the campaign.
