Newcastle Eagles began the defence of their BBL Championship title with a 72-65 win over Glasgow Rocks at Sport Central on Friday night.
The Eagles were never behind in the contest, leading 20-14 after the first quarter and taking a 14-point lead into the break that they did not look like relinquishing.
Joe Chapman led all scorers with 23 points for the victors, while Charles Smith added 15.
The re-formed Manchester Giants kicked off their return to the BBL with a thrilling 85-84 win over London Lions.
Manchester led 41-36 at the break but a third-quarter surge by the Lions - who relocated from Milton Keynes to the capital in the close season - saw them establish a 62-55 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Giants just got over the line at the buzzer, and were indebted to 29 points from James Jones.
In the day's other game, Leicester Riders ran out comfortable 71-55 winners over Sheffield Sharks.
