Eccles knocks out Fitton
Fifth seed Darryl Fitton was knocked out of the BDO World Championship at the first round stage after a 3-1 loss against Tony Eccles.
Fitton, a semi-finalist in 2005 and 2009, has struggled at Frimley Green in recent years, and started off slowly on Monday night, missing several chances to allow Eccles to take the first set.
While Fitton levelled proceedings, his failure to hit crucial doubles was to prove costly as his opponent booked his place in the second round.
"I never give up and I always thought I was still going to win the game," Fitton told BBC Sport.
"It's one of those things. I keep saying the same things - that it will be better next year - but I'm getting a bit sick of getting beaten now. I'm disappointed now, but I'll be all right."
Eccles, who will take on Holland's Wesley Harms next, said: "It's about hitting doubles at the right time. It's the first time I've had a bit of luck on the Lakeside stage. I hope it continues."
Scotland's Ross Montgomery edged out Michael Meaney of the Republic of Ireland, 3-2, Belgium's Geert De Vos came through 3-1 against Madars Razma of Latvia, while sixth seed Jan Dekker eased past fellow Dutchman Benito Van De Pas 3-0.
