Ellis and Wolfenden progress

Marcus Ellis and Tom Wolfenden made the most of a late call-up to the All England Open Championships by winning through two qualifying rounds.

The English pair, ranked 64 in the world, had been on the standby list at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham but withdrawals allowed them a spot in the first men's doubles qualifying round.

They took full advantage to secure a place in the main draw with a tight 18-21 21-16 21-18 win over Yong Zhao Ashton Chen and Zhao Yiang Terry Yeo of Singapore, and a follow-up 21-15 21-17 victory against Germany's Peter Kaesbauer and Josche Zurwonne.

Compatriots Peter Briggs and Harley Towler also won through by first beating Belgium's Mattijs Dierickx and Freek Golinski and then overcoming England team-mates Chris Coles and Matthew Nottingham.
