Ellison wants rain for Tonto

Brian Ellison is hoping for suitable conditions to allow Top Notch Tonto a run at Sandown on Friday ahead of the Lockinge Stakes.

The North Yorkshire trainer has lined up his stable star for the bet365 Mile before focusing on Newbury for the Group One showpiece on May 17.

"He'll run if it's nice ground. We need to get a prep run into him before the Lockinge," said Ellison.

"He's done really well, but obviously he will improve for the run."

Top Notch Tonto developed into a classy performer after joining Ellison last summer by winning the Group Three Superior Mile at Haydock and Redcar's Listed Guisborough Stakes.

His finest hour then came with an excellent second place behind Olympic Glory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in October.

The current going at Sandown is good, good to firm in places, though showers have been forecast this week.
